Chlorothalonil is a pesticide. The substance (2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalonitrile) is an organic compound and known as a broad-spectrum organochloride pesticide. It is a non-systemic fungicide, with other uses such as a wood protectant, pesticide, acaricide, and to control mold, mildew, bacteria and algae. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Chlorothalonil is toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. It can cause kidney and stomach damage in humans, and renal tumors in rodents and dogs.
Although the Chlorothalonil concentration found in the mineral water is well below the legal limits and is not harmful to health, but the finding is seen as significant because the mineral water comes directly from the heart of the Alps.
